Days of the People of Goodwill at Velehrad are surely the biggest celebrations connected with a national holiday of the Czech Republic. They have been taking place for 16 years already, on the occasion of the Day of the Slavonic Missionaries Saints Cyril and Methodius.

CYRIL AND METHODIUS IN FILM
The five-part docudrama will map the lives and work of the Slavonic missionaries Cyril and Methodius, primarily in an educational format.

SCHOOL OF CYRIL AND METHODIUS
On the occasion of the “Cyrillo-Methodian jubilee”, educational workshops for children and youth will emerge, the main aim of which will be to familiarize children with the Cyrillo-Methodian legacy in an amusing and practical way.
CHILDREN WALK THE WAY OF THE TWO BROTHERS
‘The Way of the Two Brothers’ is the title of an art competition for children 3 to 11 years of age. It is regularly announced within the July Days of the People of Goodwill at Velehrad. The aim of the project is to explain roots of our culture to children, impairing a positive model for life in the present.

It is an important spiritual center, a destination of frequent ecclesiastic pilgrimages, gatherings and Cyrillo-Methodian celebrations.

Velehrad – Center of Cultural Dialogue

Velehrad – Center of Cultural Dialogue

Extensive reconstructions from the European Union funds are going on at Velehrad – from the European Regional Development Fund and from the state budget of the Czech Republic through the Integrated operational program (IOP). They will be finished in 2013.

The renovated premises of Velehrad will offer to:
a common visitor – a person open to values,
a tourist – a person looking for inspiration,
a pilgrim – a Christian of western or eastern tradition,
a child visitor – the generation of the first half of the 21st century
a view of the beauty of a pilgrims’ basilica, reflection of the testimony of history, living spiritual and cultural legacy in art treasures, sacred uniqueness of Velehrad genius loci (“why we come back to a certain place”) and the traces of holiness of our forefathers.

The intended aim of the renewal of the Velehrad premises is, above all:

rediscovery of its wholeness and overcoming devastating interventions caused by historical events,
directing the visitor’s view towards the Velehrad basilica as the unifying center of gravity of the premises,
touches of the phenomenon of Christian values,
education – impulses for contemplation on the Velehrad tradition through image, symbol and short slogans,
meditating over particular values of the place of historical milestones,
incentives for overcoming evils of the 20th century ideologies present in the memory,
thoughts for communicating forgiveness,
waking trust in prayer and in God’s providence

The buildings part of the project includes renewal of the following structures:

multifunctional Velehrad house of Cyril and Methodius established through the reconstruction of former agricultural mansions, a stable and a granary at Velehrad;
renewal of the outer coating of the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Saints Cyril and Methodius;
reconstruction and restoration of the interior of the basilica: especially of the main nave of the basilica, the organ-loft, the space under the loft, the organ case and the organ itself;
reconstruction of the structure of the Roman Catholic parish at Velehrad
reconstruction and restoration of the outer coating and the interior of the little church of the Revelation of the Lord – “Cyrilka”;
building of a new, permanent educational exhibition titled “Velehrad at the Crossroads of European History” in the Velehrad house of Saints Cyril and Methodius and in the underground of the basilica;
new architectonic processing of the surfaces of the pilgrims’ premises of the basilica, including a unified information system;
building a new sanitary structure

1150th anniversary of Cyril and Methodius

Here are our roots.

They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.

For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.

Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.

The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.

Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
