Nikolaev is shooting a historical docudrama about Cyril and Methodius. His model is Vláčil.
The missionaries Cyril and Methodius become protagonists of a new historical docudrama, which director Petr Nikolaev prepares after his movie Lidice. The film with the budget of 56 million Czech korunas will follow the distressful journey of the missionaries to Europe, their meeting with Prince Rostislav and also the subsequent expulsion of both apostles. The arrival of the missionaries Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia will be commemorated by a historical film, which director Petr Nilkolaev will begin shooting this year in May. It will have its premiere next year, when the country will commemorate the 1150th anniversary of the beginning of the spreading of Christianity in Czech and Moravian lands.
The production promises a suspenseful story from the 9th century. One of the main roles should be acted by Roman Zach. The creators of the movie want to incite interest of Czech people in history. Along with the movie, there will emerge also a four part serial with elements of document and drama, under the baton of David Kočár.
Both projects enjoy support of both the Catholic and the Orthodox Church, which worship the missionaries. “So far, the story of Cyril and Methodius has not been processed with dignity in a form of a movie in our country, even though we owe them much. Their mission had an impact on the spreading of Christianity, culture, education of all Slavonic nations and it laid foundations of the Czech statehood,” Duka explained.
"Saint brothers also translated first liturgies into the Slavonic language. Their mission influenced practically the whole Europe, and that is why they were declared to be co-patrons of Europe and Apostles to the Slavs," added Vladyka Kryštof, the Metropolitan of the Orthodox Church.
Nikolaev said he would shoot not only in the Czech Republic but also in Slovakia, Greece and Italy. The film is supposed to spread awareness of historical connections. For the director, a model for the processing of the theme is František Vláčil’s style.

Here are our roots.
(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)
They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.
(Blessed John Paul II)
For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.
(Blessed John Paul II)
Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.
(Blessed John Paul II)
The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.
Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
(Blessed John Paul II)
