Preparations of the Celebrations of the Anniversary of the Arrival of Saints Cyril and Methodius in the Zlín Region are Growing in Intensity

1. 2. 2013

"This is an anniversary which has several dimensions. It is not only about the organization of the celebrations at Velehrad themselves but also about arranging many thematic conferences, exhibitions, publications, concerts and lectures, in which allowance organizations of the Zlín Region participate as well as a number of other institutions. They aim at explaining the cultural, spiritual and state-forming meaning of the Cyrillo-Methodian mission to the broadest public," the Governor of the Zlín Region, Stanislav Mišák, described the idea of the project. At the same time, he noted that the Zlín Region, in the territory of which the celebrations will culminate in July 2013, is eminently interested in having a dignified course of this extraordinary event, which will bring immense numbers of visitors to the region, including important personalities from church and public life, both from the Czech Republic and from abroad.

During the meeting of the commission, also in connection with the recent regional elections, a new member was taken on - Ladislav Kryštof, the councilor for culture, preservation of monuments and cooperation with churches. At the same time, Kryštof was appointed chairman of the Control Committee.

During the deliberations topical information about the development and course of the celebrations on the nation-wide level were presented, which the Zlín Region has been closely cooperating with from the very beginning of the preparations of the anniversary, and issues regarding organization related to events which will, within the celebrations, take place right in the Zlín Region, were discussed. For example, the Museum of Moravian Slovakia in Uherské Hradište is preparing an exhibition titled "Cyrillo-Methodian Velehrad", museums in Vsetín, Valašské Meziříčí and in Kroměříž are already offering programs and lectures for the youth as well as for the broad public, the František Bartoš Regional Library in Zlín organizes a cycle of authorial readings of Christian authors and a number of other activities is underway as well.

Since 2009, the Zlín Region has been one of the main initiators of the celebrations. In November 2009, during the audience in theVatican, representatives of the Zlín Region invited Pope Benedict XVI for a visit to Velehrad in July 2013. The Zlín Region also initiated the creation of a graphic symbol of the Cyrillo-Methodian celebrations, which has been used on the nation-wide level of the celebrations as well.

  • Here are our roots.

(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)

They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.

Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.

    (Blessed John Paul II)
