Invitation to a lecture delivered by PhDr. Vladimír Vavřínek, CSc. - BYZANTINE MISSIONS

8. 4. 2013

Beginnings of Christianity in Great Moravia. Moravia as a mission territory for bishops of Passau. Work of missionaries coming from the territory of the Aquilean patriarchate (north Italy and Dalmatia). Brick churches in Great Moravia and first church organizations. Struggle for independence of the Moravian state, Prince Rastislav against the eastern empire of Franks. Effort to establish an independent Moravian church diocese as the main reason for inviting Byzantine missionaries. Constantine the Philosopher and his brother Methodius in the Byzantine Empire. Their mission to Khazars and discovering the remains of Saint Clement in Cherson at Crimea. Constantine connectes the Moravian mission with his intention to create Slavic script and to say masses in a Slavic language – uniqueness of this intention. Thanks to both Solun brothers, Moravia becomes the first European country in which the Scripture is translated to a mother tongue. Struggle with Frank clergy over the acceptance of the Slavic liturgy. Invitation for both brothers to Rome where the pope expresses his approval of their work. Cyril's death in one of the Roman monasteries and the following approval for proclaiming him a saint. Methodius appointed the Apostolic legate for Slavic countries and later ordained a Mission Archbishop for the restored archdiocese of Pannonia (supposedly with its seat in Sirmium). Connection of this decision with the argument between the pontifical curia and the patriarchate of Constantinople over jurisdiction in Bulgaria. Methodius' return to Moravia, his capturing by Bavarian bishops. Thanks to the intervention of Pope John VIII he can finally assume his position as Archbishop of the "holy church of Moravia", he defends his faith in Rome (arguments with Frank clergy over "filioque" in the Profession of Faith), bull Industriae tuae allows using the Slavic liturgy again. Methodius' pastoral activities, his translations, work in the sphere of law; establishment of the Great Moravian school of literature. Affiliation of Prince Svatopluk with the Latin side and expulsion of Methodius' disciples from Moravia after his death. Cultural work of the Cyrillo-Methodian mission becomes legacy of southern and eastern Slavs. Cyrillo-Methodian tradition in the Czech lands and its importance for the present.

  • Here are our roots.

(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)

They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.

Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.

    (Blessed John Paul II)
