About the project "Coming to Schools"

Coming to Schools is a project, the aim of which is to present Christian themes in common primary schools (possibly also secondary schools or kindergartens). Lecturers, i.e. priests, catechets, pastoral assistants and believing teachers "enter" into classes and through thematically oriented programs introduce Christian holidays, traditions and values to pupils and students, and familiarize them with Christianity as a basis of our culture. Educational programs are in tune with the Framework Education Programs for Elementary Education, they fulfil e.g. cross-sectional themes Multicultural Education and Personal and Social Education.

The Diocesan Catechetical Center organizes educational seminars for lecturers of the programs where participants gain basic information and data for realization of concrete programs at schools. The programs are offered to schools free of charge and they take place in the presence of teachers right in the classrooms. The lecturers come to schools after previous agreement with the spiritual administrator of the parish, in the territory of which the school is located and with an approval from the headmaster of the school.

In the Diocese of Brno, the project has been realized since fall 2010. Up to now, three series of programs have been covered:
• The Message of Christian Christmas
• The Message of Christian Easter
• All Saints Day and Halloween in Tradition and Culture

Each of these themes is divided and covered within three independent educational programs (corresponding to the three age categories of primary school pupils). All educational programs won an accreditation of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic in the system of Further education of pedagogical workers. Priests, catechets, pastoral assistants and teachers from various parishes of the Diocese of Brno got involved in the realization of the project. Before entering the class itself, all of them took part in a seminar for lecturers organized by the Diocesan Catechetic Center.

The Message of Christian Easter
In the course of April 2011, programs called The Message of Christian Easter took place in 34 primary schools in the Diocese of Brno. Altogether 27 lecturers and their assistants met with pupils at schools (more than 3,200 pupils participated in it) and together they were meditating on the Biblical story of Easter and its importance for Christians.

All Saints Day and Halloween in Tradition and Culture
The project continued in October and November 2011 with the programs called All Saints Day and Halloween in Tradition and Culture, intended for pupils attending primary schools in their 4th grade to 9th grade (possibly also secondary schools). 23 lecturers at 21primary and secondary schools introduced the Christian tradition of celebrating the Memory of all the faithful deceased and the Anglosaxon tradition of celebrating Halloween. More than 1,600 pupils and students participated in these programs.

The Message of Christian Christmas
As expected, it was the program from the cycle titled The Message of Christian Christmas that enjoyed the greatest interest on the part of schools. These were realized in December 2011. The demand for these programs exceeded the possibilities of the fifty lecturers who were involved in its realization. The lecturers managed to visit 47 kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools at various places of the diocese and to address more than 4,700 pupils and students through the programs.

What are we planning now?
Because at most schools, which participated in the project, the educational programs met with a positive response (both on part of the pupils and teachers) and teachers were interested in other "comings", we will continue with preparation and realization of programs on Christian themes also this year. Because the schools showed interest in these topics, we are preparing another series of programs related to Christmas and Easter and also a new theme -- The Bible – The Book of Books.

  • For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.

  • Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.

  • The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.

Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
