Bulgarian Vice-President to Come to a Conference on Cyril and Methodius

28. 5. 2013

Within her state visit to the Czech Republic, the Bulgarian vice-president, Margarita Popovova, will visit also Brno, where she will take part in the 4th International Czech-South Slavic conference on 30th May, which is organized by the Institute for Slavic Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Masaryk University and a citizens' association called Porta Balkanica. The Bulgarian female politician has taken the conference under her patronage. This year, its form has been influenced by the 1150th anniversary of the arrival of the Slavic missionaries to Great Moravia. In Bulgaria, the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition is very strong. 24th May is celebrated both as the Day of Saints Cyril and Methodius, and the Day of Slavic Culture and Education.

"Masaryk University and the Bulgarian Republic are experiencing a unique, symbiotic situation because during the last decade, two high political representatives of one country have spoken on the grounds of Masaryk University – in 2005, it was the then President Georgi Părvanov after he had received the Grand Gold Medal of Masaryk University and, eight years later, it will be the vice-president, Margarita Popovova," noted the main organizer of the conference, Elena Krejčová.

The important anniversary has also influenced the attendance at this year of the conference, which will host more than one hundred participants from eleven countries. Experts will discuss teaching south Slavic languages as foreign languages. This is the case when the languages are taught to foreigners or in a foreign country. Apart from south Slavic languages - Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian - contributions will also deal with teaching Czech and Czech literature in the south Slavic environment and teaching Slavic literatures at universities in our country. A reason for organizing a Slavic conference on the grounds of Masaryk University is, apart from other things, the fact that it is the only university in the Czech Republic that offers study of practically all Slavic languages within individual philological fields.

  • Here are our roots.

(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)

They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.

    (Blessed John Paul II)

  • The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.

Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
