Brno: The cross belongs to the most valuable archaeological findings in Moravia. However, not even scientists know much about its origin and, above all, its rather strange processing. The Christ is depicted there in a tunic with a hood over his head. Perhaps, it could be a clerical garment. Bishop Cikrle received a copy of the cross at the beginning of the 1990s during a pilgrimage in Mikulčice and he grew fond of it not only because it belonged to the oldest findings in the territory of the diocese of Brno.
Jiří Netík, a woodcarver and sculptor, processed the pectoral in an artistic way. He embedded the cross in a larger wooden cross made of oak wood, which was lying with the original of the cross in the soil for more than 1,100 years. He added red glass and he framed that all with silver plate. Thus, a very original work emerged. Bishop Vojtěch received it from the Royal Holy See Chapter of Saint Peter and Paul as a gift on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday.
"I often need to respond to interest on part of people who want to have a close look at the pectoral. Even during meetings with bishops from abroad, the pectoral keeps arousing interest," said Bishop Vojtěch to the Czech Press Agency some time ago. The financial value of the pectoral is, according to the bishop, insignificant. It is more important as a symbol related to Christian and cultural foundations laid by Saints Cyril and Methodius in Moravia.
Those interested may learn more about the cross during their visit to the open-air museum in Mikulčice. It is not only Bishop Cikrle, who owns its copy, but also Pope Benedict XVI. He received it from the bishop of Brno as a gift during his visit to Brno in September 2009.

Here are our roots.
(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)
They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.
(Blessed John Paul II)
For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.
(Blessed John Paul II)
Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.
(Blessed John Paul II)
The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.
Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
(Blessed John Paul II)
