Aleš Flídr: ARCHITECTURE OF GREAT MORAVIA
Wednesday 20th February at 5 p.m.
Annotation: We can connect the beginnings of stone architecture in Moravia with the environment in Great Moravia at the end of the 8th century and throughout the 9th century, which was influenced by its princes and the church. Archaeological research that took place in the second half of the 20th century disclosed foundations of a number of buildings at the fortified settlements in Mikulčice, Staré Město, Pohansko at Břeclav, etc. Only a few years ago, the existence of the only till now standing construction from the period of Great Moravia was proved, namely the church of Saint Margita in Kopčany. First buildings in Moravia can be connected with the Caroline building tradition coming, together with the Latin clergy, from the environment of the Frank Empire. Later on, Byzantine influences came, as well as those from Dalmatia and Italy, which is connected with the arrival of the missionaries, Cyril and Methodius, to Moravia and with their journeys to Rome.
Mgr. Aleš Flídr (*1973) works as a librarian of the Art History Department of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. Above all, he is professionally interested in the history of the Czech lands and the art of the Roman and early Gothic period, especially sacral and castle architecture in Moravia, based on research in the archives, archaeology and historical buildings. Pavel Suchánek: BETWEEN HISTORY AND LEGEND. CYRILLO-METHODIAN TRADITION IN BAROQUE ART
Wednesday 27th February at 5 p.m.
Annotation: The Czech historiography of the Enlightenment created from the Baroque Cyrillo-Methodian tradition one of the sources of the modern national patriotism. However, a number of authors claimed that the Baroque development of the Cyrillo-Methodian cult and art representations of the Cyrillo-Methodian legends was rather an expression of “patriotism” of individual Baroque patriots than any official support on part of the diocesan hierarchy. Therefore, in this part of the cycle of debates we will try to think about the role of the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition played in the period of Baroque, and where those who ordered several particular works of art, coming from the environment of baroque spiritual aristocracy and bishops of Olomouc, saw its historical meaning.
Mgr. Pavel Suchánek, Ph.D. (*1975), historian and art historian, author of works dealing with cultural history and history of early modern times in central Europe. He works as an Assistant Professor of the Art History Department of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno.
Another activity of the regional library is the creation of a selective bibliography titled Cyrillo-Methodian Velehrad in Literature, which is available at www.kfbz.cz/cmv. The bibliography provides a summary of fundamental works on themes related to the Cyrillo-Methodian tradition and the history of Velehrad. It should help, above all, to pupils and students in basic orientation and direct them to other sources, but it could also help the broad public interested in their cultural and historical roots.

Here are our roots.
(Blessed John Paul II, 22nd April 1990, Velehrad)
They wanted to become part of those nations and to share their destiny in everything. Here, in this place, at Velehrad, in Moravia, we can feel the historical legacy of the kingdom in a peculiar way – we can feel even those who became its keepers and guardians.
(Blessed John Paul II)
For us, people of the present age, their apostolate contains even the elocution of the ecumenical appeal, i.e. to build unity again, in a peaceful reconciliation, which later after their deaths was heavily damaged, and in the first place the unity between the East and the West.
(Blessed John Paul II)
Their work is also a very important contribution to the growth of the common Christian roots of Europe, which by their firmness and viability create one of the main contact points, which must be respected by every serious attempt at reunification of our continent in a new and topical way.
(Blessed John Paul II)
The story of both brothers, Cyril and Methodius, is a distinct example of unity.
Saints Cyril and Methodius contributed, to a great extent, to the building of Europe, not only regarding its Christian religious community but also concerning its civil and cultural unity.
(Blessed John Paul II)
